Star Wars was never big on chronological order. On Wednesday the teaser trailer for the first Star Wars spinoff, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, was released.
The movie will expand on the story first teased in the opening crawl of Star Wars: A New Hope, where Rebel spies stole secret plans to the Death Star. As a fan of the Star Wars universe this movie gets me both excited and nervous. Any time a franchise tries to spin off from it’s original material the results are not always optimal. Look at the case of X-Men for example. That franchise started the trend of dark superhero movies and was extremely successfully both critically and financially. One of the biggest selling points was Wolverine, so naturally a stand alone movie was in order. We all know how that turned out.
What I hope this movie and these Star Wars spinoffs do it tell a complete one movie story. Star Wars already has their franchise and should focus on that. These movies need to tell their own story and tie to the larger universe without the anticipation that there needs to be sequels. One of my biggest concerns for this movie is the inclusion or lack of inclusion of Darth Vader. If he is included then Star Wars risks ruining arguably the most iconic villain of all time, yet if he is not in the movie then many fans might be angry since he is such a focal point of the Death Star and this time period of Star Wars. It is a tough predicament for the filmmaker.
As for the trailer itself, there are many moments that will make any nostalgic fans happy such as the shot of AT-AT walkers. My biggest problem is the weird yelling music that kicks in around the one minute mark. I started laughing the first time I heard it. I thought it was a bizarre choice, but that’s just my opinion. This movie has a great cast, led by Felicity Jones. Unfortunately for her she has the impossible task of following Daisy Ridley, as the tough female protagonist. Overall this trailer does a fantastic job of showing very little in terms of plot yet has enough action and mystery that will excite any fan.
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is directed by Gareth Edwards, and stars Felicity Jones, Mads Mikkelsen, Alan Tudyk, Donnie Yen, Ben Mendelsohn, Forest Whitaker, and Diego Luna. It hits theaters December 16, 2016.
